Winter Wonderland brings Travel Chaos to the UK
Recent winter weather and snowfall has thrown the United Kingdom into chaos.
In some of the worst hit parts of the country roads are littered with abandoned cars. Many were attempting to retrieve their vehicles as temperatures began to increase a little today. A number of people are reported to have been trapped in their cars overnight in sub zero temperatures.
There has been a lot of disruption to public transport with bus and train services cancelled and many flights also cancelled. Eurostar high speed trains to and from Europe have suffered break downs due to the ingress of snow into the trains power compartment. Around 2000 passengers were stranded for up to 16 hours in the tunnel beneath the English Channel. Some suffered panic attacks and many complained about the lack of information, food and water.
After three consecutive days with no service Eurostar have now begun to resume normal operation of their high speed train service. They now have huge passenger backlogs to deal with in both France and the UK.
The National Health service has told people to stay at home unless their journey is essential. Hospitals have reported unprecedented numbers of people injured as a result of falling on icy pavements.
With Christmas only days away many people need to visit their local towns in order to complete their pre-christmas shopping. This is forcing many people to go out onto dangerous, icy footpaths.
Discussions have already begun regarding how well the UK has coped with this latest round of bad weather. While main roads were quickly treated with grit and salt many smaller side roads remained untreated and most pavements and footpath were completely untreated.
Earlier in 2009 the UK experienced some intense winter weather that plunged the country into arctic conditions, wreaking havoc upon transportation, schools and industry. This latest bad weather is prompting many to ask if the UK is capable of dealing with intense winter weather.
