Why Active Travelers Prefer Iceland?

Iceland is famous because of its wide variety of tourist attractions. Some trips involve traveling quite a bit into the interior of iceland, while others focus on smaller areas on the coastline. Iceland has something for everyone: for those who are interested in more traditional vacations and those who like extreme sports. Tours range from a few days to a whole holiday. Nature tours will delight visitors with breathtaking landscapes, fresh lava fields, roaring waterfalls and beautiful ice caps.

You can visit the uninhabited interior of Iceland only in July and August, unless you choose specially organized winter tours. Touring Iceland in the winter is unforgettable: both beginner and advanced skiers can practice their skiing skills, and you can opt also for ice fishing and glacier tours on snowmobile.

As you can see, there is no better destination for the active tourist than Iceland. There is a wide selection of activity vacations all over Iceland: glacier tours, hiking, river rafting, fishing, horseback riding, swimming, whale watching and boat tours.

Glaciers can be visited in any season, with snowmobiles in the winter or super jeeps in the summer. Those who prefer a quiet walk also have a lot of opportunities: the greatest part of Iceland is covered by lava, lakes, sand or glaciers. There are few paths, but nevertheless hiking is very popular in Iceland.

Other popular activities are the water sports: enthusiasts can choose from kayaking on inland rivers, gentle bays or wild shores. Those who prefer river rafting, can have a lot of thrills in swirling glacial waters. Swimming is also very popular in Iceland. There are outdoor or indoor swimming pools everywhere, filled with the water of natural hot springs. The water temperature is about 29 degrees Celsius, and in many places there are jacuzzis, saunas, solariums and hot spots with temperature between 36 to 44 degrees Celsius.

Fishing is also great in Iceland: salmon and trout are particularly popular. Those who are interested in salmon fishing should schedule their trip from June to mid September, and they must know permits have to be arranged in advance. Trout season is from April/May until late September/October, and tourists can have their permits on the spot. In the winter, ice fishing is popular, and those who are seeking for more extreme adventure, can go sea angling. The season for sea angling begins in late May and ends at the end of August. At the end of the season, tournaments are organized all across Iceland.

There are also various sizes and species of whales in the North Atlantic. Whale watching is another big hit with the tourists, and one can choose from quite a few whale watching ports all around the coastline.

Bird watchers are also welcome, because there is no larger birdcliff than Látrabjarg in the West Fjords. A wide variety of cliff nesting species can be watched here, along with the largest razorbill colony in the world. A wide variety of seabirds and the largest puffin population in Iceland can be found in Westman Islands.

If You Had A Choice, Where Would Your Favourite Holiday Destination Be?

Now that the dark nights are here and the weather is looking rather gloomy and grey, some people are already thinking about where they might be able to get a bit of holiday sunshine next summer.

Some holidaymakers like to return to their favourite hotel year after year.As an example look at Michael and Mary Hirst.  They are both in their 70’s and they have been visiting the beautiful island of Malta for the past 50 years.

Their first trip in November 1959 was spent at the Hotel Phoenicia.  They had been on a trip to West Africa and decided to stop off in Malta on their way home. They really enjoyed their first trip, so much so that they have practically holidayed there year after year, pretty much staying at the same hotel.

It does seem strange that you would actually want to return to the same country year after year.  Nowadays there are so many wonderful and fascinating countries to explore; it just seems quite peculiar that they haven’t visited anywhere else for their holidays.

Mind you, at least they know that their holiday accommodation will be alright, sometimes you just can’t be sure what you are letting yourself in for and it can ruin the whole holiday.

The good thing is we all enjoy doing different things on holiday. For some people their annual holiday is simply spent taking it easy around the pool all day, lapping up their 2 weeks annual sunshine.  Others like to go crazy and do something completely different. There is such a huge amount of different sorts of holidays just waiting for us to take up the challenge of a lifetime.

For example maybe you have always dreamed of taking a nice relaxing walking holiday. If so, perhaps it might be a good idea to consider the Rioja region in Spain and take the opportunity to see some of the beautiful landscapes

It is said that the scenery absolutely takes your breath away and you have the opportunity of staying at some brilliant hotels and inns during your stay.

There are so many different destinations you could choose from, that the choice is yours.Personally for me I am more than pleased with my 2 week break in the sunshine, sipping yet another Gin and Tonic whilst taking it easy on my sunbed.  I don’t really want to go on an Active Holiday and to be honest my daily argument with fellow  holidaymakers over who gets the best sunbed is quite enough excitement for me.
